One of the easiest activity themes I have EVER prepped, and it targeted so many skills! We practiced turn taking, matching and identifying colours and objects, but most of all we had fun.
Whenever I'm at the thrift store I check the toy section for small toys to go in sensory bins or for sorting activities. I found a set of these at Value Village for $2.99, which fueled the fire for this colouring sorting theme. I did this with a 3yo, and I honestly didn't expect to enjoy it as much as we did!
I love activities that naturally work on speech when I'm playing with toddlers and there was so much great conversation with this activity!
We talked about different types of transportation; car, plane, boat, train. Sorting by colour and sorting by vehicle type.
We had a ton of these circle stickers left over from something and I wanted to get rid of them. But after this I ordered more, they're so versatile and I plan on using them for a lot of activities!
We ran out of red stickers so we "problem solved" and decided it was okay to use green on the red triangle.
The girl (3yo) I did this with loves task oriented activities, so I'm not surprised one bit that she loved this.
At this point, I was happy. The activities I planned were "completed". But the unplanned part that came next, was the most authentic, fun part of the entire activity.
As I was setting our materials up to take this photo and show all of you how well it went; she grabbed the red plane and said:
"I'm going to fly the red plane to the red triangle! Now I'm going to float the green boat to the green circle"
I've worked alongside enough Speech Language Pathologists to know how great that is! So I jumped in and "drove the yellow car to the yellow triangle" and we played like this for another 30 minutes. The child-led portion of this activity was by far the most fun and rewarding for all of us!
If you try a colour sorting activity for your little ones, or have tips for sorting activities I would love to hear from you!
